I conduct research with the ultimate goal of reducing the costly personal and societal burden of mental health. Specifically, my program of research focuses on delineating the structure, functional outcomes, and malleability of 'theory of mind'-the collection of skills that allow us to identify, predict, and alter internal mental states (e.g., beliefs, emotions, desires) arising in the minds of others and oneself. My work is grounded in dimensional and transdiagnostic approaches that facilitate the study of the full range of theory of mind skills. To date, I have expanded interpersonal models of psychopathology by demonstrating that theory of mind is intricately linked to interpersonal functioning. My research has also identified key behavioral mechanisms that facilitate both positive and negative interpersonal outcomes. In my current work, I am examining theory of mind as a mechanism of change in psychotherapy.
