Human milk is the gold standard for infant and childhood feeding. The process of supporting breastmilk initiation and sustaining supply is complicated by multiple societal factors. The better support families can have to sustain providing human milk has short- and long-term benefits for individuals, families, and society as a whole. Trauma can significant impact parents decision to initiate breastfeeding or seek assistance when problems arise. As a Pediatrician and Breastfeeding Medicine specialist, I work to collaborate with researchers and community advocates to address the barriers to providing the best nutrition to children. The overall goal is better long term developmental and health outcomes for all.
