Andre M Headshot

I practiced medicine for 40 years, specializing in pediatric pulmonology. 20 years ago, I engaged with an international relief and development NGO, eventually becoming its chief medical officer and interim CEO. This global health experience led to me co-founding TEAM Malawi (Technology-Education-Advocacy-Medicine Malawi) with other members of the Virginia Tech community. I also co-founded the Pediatric Medical Device Institute, an early member of the FDA's Pediatric Consortia program. Through each of these, we have strived to bring medical technology from the bench to the bedside. Working primarily with undergraduate students, we model team science, a community wellness model of healthcare delivery, and community based participatory research, design, and pedagogy. Currently, we have engaged 350+ students in global research projects and provided the opportunity for 64+ students to travel to Malawi for experiential learning.
