I am an infectious diseases physician with expertise in immunovirology, translational research, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19. My career has included basic and clinical research, NIH-funded research, leadership of NIH basic and clinical training grants, direction of the COVID-19 response in southwestern Virginia and the Ebola Virus response in Connecticut, and patient care. I am the former chair of medicine at the University of Connecticut and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine; currently I chair the Department of Basic Science Education at Virginia Tech. All of my work has involved prominent interdisciplinary engagement to ultimately improve the health of people locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
